Jason Bradley Thompson

I was born in San Francisco. My earliest comics were rip-offs of DOCTOR WHO, newspaper strips and science fiction and horror movies. In college while studying Creative Writing, I discovered both anime/manga and American small-press comics. In 1996 I was hired as an editor at VIZ Media, where I edited numerous manga, including the first several issues of the American edition of SHONEN JUMP magazine. In my spare time I self-published several comics, including a 5-issue comic adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, and later contributed to the animated film adaptation by Guerilla Productions. In 2003 I began work on my story webcomic The Stiff. In 2006 I left VIZ in order to work on Manga: The Complete Guide, the first encyclopedia of manga published in English. In 2010 I moved to Seattle and married my beautiful & brilliant wife, Jumana Al Hashal.

Currently I draw, write comics and write about manga. I am writing King of RPGs with Victor Hao, drawing several adaptations of H.P. Lovecraft stories, and working on an as yet unannounced project with another artist. My writings on manga have appeared in The Comics Journal, Wired, Comixology, io9.com, Anime News Network (for which I write the regular column House of 1000 Manga), Otaku USA (for which I am manga editor) and the defunct magazines PULP and Animerica.
