The Alchemist's Notebook es un extracto de la novelización de The Cry of Cthulhu, una fallida película basada en los Mitos de Cthulhu cuyo estreno estaba previsto para el verano de 1981. El guión estaba escrito por David Hurd.
Existe un reportaje publicado en el número 24 de la revista Starlog (especializada en cine de ciencia-ficción), en el que aparece el siguiente resumen de la trama de la película:
A young American couple inherits an isolated mansion located in Germany's Black Forest. After moving into the old house, they soon learn that their new abode is situated near a barren battleground where hundreds of American and German soldiers perished during the World War II. To their further dismay, their discover that the estate is swarming with mysterious, menacing beings... a horde of demonic creatures released by the manor's previous tenant, a deranged old sorcerer. During the ensuing confusion, the husband experiences a strange dream in which he journeys to the celestial city of Kadath where he encounters a bizarre race of Elder Beings. The Beings attempt to communicate to the uncomprehending hero a sinister plot to affect to release of Cthulhu: one of the dread lords of the Great Old Ones which where expelled aeons ago from Earth by the opposing Elder Beings. Should Cthulhu be freed, the protagonist is warned, he will cry out in defiance of the Beings, shattering the astral chains which fetter the Great Old Ones. Unleashed, the Old Ones will descend from the void and resume their tyranny over the world once more.
Según lo publicado por Starlog, dos millones de dólares, de un presupuesto inicial de siete millones, estaban destinados a crear los efectos especiales.
"It isn´t a matter of getting a bunch of money, so let's do a whole bunch of special effects that cost a lot more (...) The money is enabling us to do things that we were not able to do before. Originally, the film was going to be shot in Michigan, using local talent and a star for two weeks. We couldn't even go into building any kins of sets, we couldn't use anymated creatures to speak of. Now we're able to show things that before were more or less alluded to with screenplay and graphics."

Y no estaba previsto que Cthulhu hiciera acto de presencia en la película:
"I do not think Cthulhu should ever appear in any Lovecraf film. Cthulhu should always remains the unseen."

The Alchemist's Notebook cuenta la historia de Heinrich Muller, un nazi que pierde más de un tornillo a causa de los horrores y sufrimientos que contempla durante la segunda Guerra Mundial. Al final de la guerra, mientras se recupera de sus heridas en un hospital, se pone a reflexionar sobre todo lo vivido y el papel de los hombres en el devenir de la historia, cuando recuerda un pasaje que leyó en uno de los libros de la biblioteca de su tío: "In his house, in R'lyeh dead Cthulhu dreams waiting". Desde entonces, el propósito de su vida pasa a ser el de restaurar el dominio de los Primigenios sobre la tierra. Años después, gracias a sus investigaciones, descubre que la puerta que comunica nuestra dimensión con la prisión de los Primigenios en el reino de N'Kai, se encuentra cerca de la mansión de su tío, a las afueras de Stuttgart, en la Selva Negra; la misma mansión que heredarán años después los protagonistas de la película...
I now hold the secrets to unlock the gateway. The others have been fools to profess that they knew the time, the place, and the secret. I know that it is here and now, and I shall stand next to the Masters as They again reign, as They conquer by fear this world that is rightfully Theirs. I will be the most powerfull of men (...) The new time of the Great Old Ones will begin soon, and I shall be the one to lead Him forth from the dimensional prison in which have been forced to dwell for the eons (...) the world will be ours, and the way will be littered with mankind... pitiful man!

Una lástima que películas como esta no pudieran ser. Lo curioso es que el argumento es igualito, igualito que muchas aventuras de los módulos oficiales: The Alchemist's Notebook se me asemeja al capítulo de información para el guardián, y la película, a la trama de la partida.
¡Que buena pinta! Lástima que no la llevaran a cabo, desde luego...

No me suena, debe de ser un blog nuevo.
Ya dirás qué tal está el libro. A mí el argumento me recuerda un poco al de La Fortaleza, que era pésimo.
